Photos: Gateways to the First World War
Passchendaele Memorial Museum, July 2017
This event was a dramatised recreation of the St Barnabas Pilgrimage to Ypres in 1923. It was commissioned by the Department of Digital, Culture, Media and Sport as part of the official national commemorations to mark the centenary of the Third Battle of Ypres.
The event attracted over 22,000 visitors from around the world over the three days it ran. VIP visitors included King Charles and Queen Camilla (then the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall), King Philip and Queen Mathilde of the Belgians, and the Rt Hon Teresa May (then Prime Minister).
This event was created by Gateways to the First World War, a five year project funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council to encourage public engagement with the First World War centenary. Gateways, which I conceived and directed, ran a diverse programme of events between universities, museums and community groups.
